When and why did you decide to pursue this dive?

While growing up, I always saw my aunt making/sewing dresses and I wanted to learn about that ever since. Well, in 2016, I finally enrolled in sewing classes while living in the UK. Unfortunately, I could not complete the course since I started my new job and the course was during weekdays. However, in 2017, I spent some of my free time learning about making Indian traditional Kurtis from my friend.

How long did it take for you to accomplish this dive from the day you decided to pursue it, and why did it take that long?

It took around 1 year to accomplish this dive. It took that long because although I started learning, I had to move from one place to another and each time, I again had to search for a new instructor.

What do you think is the hardest & easiest part about this dive and level?

The hardest part is that it requires a lot of dedication & physical work to make a dress. You should be very careful, because if you make any small mistake while cutting, it will be very tough to mend. Even while stitching, you should be very careful: if you do make any mistake, removing the stitch & putting it back again is a very difficult task for me.

The easiest part is that we have a good electronic sewing machine with different patterns of stitches that we found at a good price. I have a machine that makes over 100 types of stitches which cost $60 (USD). I have only used 3 to 4 patterns of stitches so far. Also, electronic sewing machines are much better than sewing with a manual machine. You really need lot of strength to paddle the manual machine.

What is your advice for someone who is pursuing this dive and level?

Initially it is better to take some courses to learn how sewing machines operate and to learn how to mend a mistake if something goes wrong while stitching. However, once you know the basics, you can follow many great tutorials on YouTube to learn more.

How did you prove you met the requirements for this level?

I made two dresses for my daughter, the first of which you will read about below. My daughter confirmed to Break Diving that I made these dresses for her.

Tell us a story about creating an article of clothing.

In 2017, for my daughter’s birthday, we had decided on a rainbow theme birthday party. We searched for some dress designs online & my daughter asked me to make one of the dresses she found.

Truthfully, I was not confident that I could make the dress, since I was still learning. I began making all the arrangements for the party, and arranged for everything… except for the dress.

Finally, on the last day before the party, I went and bought supplies and started making the dress at 2pm and finished it at 2am. It took twelve hours!

It was not a perfect dress but my daughter was so happy to see that I made it for her and gave it my best try. I feel proud of myself whenever I see that dress.

Final note: the best best part about knowing how to sew is re-using. We can convert kids winter pants that don’t fit anymore or convert those that have torn into summer shorts that look brand new.

Will you be pursuing the next level? If so, what is the next level, and what is your plan? If not, why not?

Yes. I want to learn how to make different pattern dresses. My daughter who wishes to become a fashion designer has made sketches of dresses for herself and her doll. I am planning to make those dresses.
